A man who visited his former partner's house armed with a baton and who assaulted a policeman was this morning given a six-month jail term suspended for a year.

Emanuel Savona said he went to his ex partner's house to speak to her. But the police received a report from third parties that he had gone to beat her up.

When policemen went to her house, they found the accused drunk and armed with a baton. They tried to diffuse the situation, which, however, escalated and a police officer was threatened and assaulted.

The police also found that Mr Savona had been driving without a licence and insurance.

He was also fined €1,200 had his driving licence suspended for a year.
