Manchester United have opened up a five-point gap on Liverpool at the top of the Premier League after the 3-0 midweek win over Fulham at Old Trafford.

Critics and pundits consider the Red Devils as the best team in England and have been talking up their chances of winning a quadruple of trophies.

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola was full of praise for United, dubbing them as 'the untouchables'. Arsenal's Arsene Wenger used the same word to describe the English champions this week.

This afternoon, United again play in front of their 75,000-plus home crowd when they entertain lowly Blackburn Rovers.

Alex Ferguson's men are unbeaten in their last 14 league matches, a positive run that shows only two draws.

Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has now gone 14 league matches without conceding a goal. The Dutchman has also broken the league record of 1,104 minutes without picking the ball from his net. The previous mark was set by Reading's Steve Death in 1979.

In addition to their lofty position in the Premier League, United are in the final of the League Cup, the last eight of the FA Cup and the knock-out phase of the Champions League.

United are chasing their fifth double of the season after they beat Blackburn 2-0 (Brown, Rooney) in the reverse fixture at Ewood Park.

The four teams to suffer home and away league defeats to United so far this term are West Ham, West Brom, Bolton and Stoke.

Sam Allardyce's Blackburn have slipped back into the relegation zone, just one point off rock bottom. United had also beaten Rovers 5-3 (Tevez 4, Nani − McCarthy 2, Derbyshire) in the last eight of the League Cup at home.

The Liverpool fans are worried about stories that not everything is well at Anfield, especially when it comes to negotiations over new contracts.

While manager Rafa Benitez is waiting to sign another deal, defender Daniel Agger is threatening to leave if he's not offered a new contract.

City manager Mark Hughes was gutted by his side's 0-2 defeat against Portsmouth and hopes to see more commitment from his team at Anfield.

Villa Park clash

Two other top-four candidates, Aston Villa and Chelsea, clash at Villa Park this afternoon.

Guus Hiddink will make his debut for the Blues. The Dutch coach lifted the optimism of the Chelsea fans when, in his first day of training, told reporters that the Blues are still in contention for the title.

After their defeat at Old Trafford, Fulham will be keen to add three more points to their tally of 30 when they cross swords with bottom-placed West Brom at home.

Fulham must also contend with a cup replay against Swansea (away) to reach the quarter-finals and set up a clash with Manchester United.

West Brom youngster James Morrison said his club must win six games from their remaining 13 to retain their status. But that looks like a tall order as West Brom have won only six times this season.

West Ham, now bidding for a UEFA Cup place, will be on the road to combat Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

Zola will have to do without injured striker Carlton Cole but the Italian is glad that negotiations to renew the contracts of several players are finally underway.

Stoke and Portsmouth are lurking just above the relegation zone.

Their duel at the Britannia Stadium will not be for the faint-hearted, since both sides are renowned for their robust approach to matches... more brawn than brains.
