A 43-year-old man with “anger management problems” was remanded into custody and taken to Mount Carmel Hospital today after he allegedly threatened to assault his ex-girlfriend.

Sunny Degabriele, from Qormi, was charged with violent and threatening behaviour and with damaging his former partner Vincenza Bonnici’s property when he broke down her front door on Saturday night.

The court, presided by Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, nominated a probation officer to review Mr Degabrielle’s conduct and a psychiatrist to assess his physical and mental condition.

Mr Degabriele said he had been receiving regular treatment for a variety of conditions, including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

The prosecution, led by Inspector Roderick Agius, argued against the defence’s bail plea, on the basis that the accused may commit further offences as he was “unhappy with the way his relationship with the victim had ended”. Dr Scerri Herrera agreed.

The court will reconvene to hear the rest of the case tomorrow.
