A Maltese and an Egyptian were injured this morning in an incident during which a knife was used.

The Maltese, a 56-year-old man from Attard, was slightly injured, the 37-year-old Egyptian, who lives in Valletta was grievously injured. He is not in a critical condition

The incident happened at the top of Republic Street, opposite Burger King, at about 7.15 a.m.

The men were rushed to hospital in an ambulance.  The police are investigating.

Informed sources said this case appeared to have been an attempted hold-up, with the Egyptian having demanded cash from the owner of a nearby kiosk, who, however, resisted. A struggle ensued.

The injuries are not believed to be serious.
