A businessman was shot and injured this morning in Windmill Street car park in Valletta, near Hastings Garden.

The incident happened at about 8.45 a.m.

People on the scene said that the shooting took place shortly after Mr Baldacchino parked his car in the lower car park of the area.

As he walked away, a motorcycle drew up and the motorcyclist, who was wearing a dark helmet, shot Mr Baldacchino in the back.

Mr Baldacchino ran towards the square, which is also used as a car park, and hid between the cars. He was followed by the assailant on the motorcycle, but he then sped away.

Mr Baldacchino, who was still conscious when the police arrived, was rushed to hospital in an ambulance and operated upon.

Sources said the motorcycle is believed to have been stolen from Marsa a month ago.

Police investigators found a bullet and a number plate from the motorcycle on the scene of the crime.

Mr Baldacchino has a range of business interests in Malta and Gozo including real estate, hotels and reception halls and entertainment outlets.

A forensics team has descended on the area looking for clues, and the police have been interviewing neighbours, people who were on the scene and business partners to get an insight into what could have taken place.

APPEAL FOR BLOOD

The Health Department late in the morning said the victim required a large amount of blood, and it was therefore calling for urgent donations of ' O' positive blood.

It said the Blood Bank at Guardamangia would remain open till 6 p.m. or longer if necessary.

Informed sources said that Mr Baldacchino was urgently operated at Mater Dei and his condition this afternoon was serious.
