A man was seriously injured and two others sustained light injuries in a head-on crash between two cars at Triq-is-Salina, Salina, early on Monday.

The police said the crash, at about 1am, involved a Peugeot 106 driven by a 23-year-old woman from Victoria, Gozo, and a Fiat Doblo driven by a 25-year-old man resident in Marsascala.

The severely injured man, a 26-year-old foreigner, was a passenger in the Peugeot. He was trapped in the wreckage of the car, freed by rescuers from the Civil Protection Department and rushed to hospital.

The two drivers were also hospitalised. Their condition is not believed to be serious. A passenger in the Fiat was unhurt.

A magisterial inquiry is under way.
