A man was seriously injured this morning in a crash between a coach and a car at Triq It-Trunciera, near Fra Ben in Qawra.

The incident happened at about 7.30 a.m.

Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department had a difficult and delicate task to extract the man from the wreckage of the Peugeot 206 he had been driving. The rescue team was led by John Gera and Tony Micallef.

The driver, who is a 25-year-old from Xaghjra, was rushed to hospital in an ambulance.

Both vehicles travelled some distance after their strong impact and parts of the car including a wheel, were scattered for some 50 metres on the road.

The road has been closed for traffic and a magisterial inquiry is under way.

The occupants of the coach, including tourists, were not injured but the coach driver, a 43-year-old from Qormi, was treated for shock.
