A man was granted bail under the supervision of a probation officer today after he was accused of assaulting a policeman.

The alleged incident took place at Mosta police station on Saturday when the accused, Geoffrey Cassar, 29, went in to sign the bail book.

The police had objected to the granting of bail.

The court was informed that the accused had previously been allowed bail twice as well as having been granted a probation order and a suspended sentence.

The court said it was granting bail against a deposit of €200 and a personal guarantee of €1,500 and also placing the accused under probation.

Dr Franco Debono was defence counsel.
