A man accused of attempting to murder his drug buddy offered a penknife in exchange for drugs and used the same weapon to stab the man, a court heard today.

Police Sergeant Arthur Rizzo testified that the victim and his girlfriend said the incident took place on October 21 when Julian Cuschieri, 51, from Cospicua, tried to offer Stefano Caruana a penknife in exchange for cocaine.

He was testifying in the compilation of evidence against  Mr Cuschieri, who stands charged with attempting to kill Mr Caruana when he stabbed him close to his heart. He is also denying being in possession of cocaine and heroin and relapsing.

Mr Rizzo told Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit that the penknife was not found.

Constable John Paul Young said he was inside the Cospicua police station on the night in question when just after midnight, he heard screams outside the station. When he went outside, he found Mr Caruana holding the right side of his chest with blood oozing from a wound. He said the man said Mr Cuschieri had stabbed him.

The case continues.
