I found the interview with Toni Abela, deputy leader of the Labour Party (The Sunday Times, January 17), most revealing. Asked who the real Toni Abela is, the Labour deputy leader listed classical music and literature as his interests - truly a man of culture.

So it is very perplexing to see this man of culture, in an article in L-Orizzont, heap ridicule on the recent honour bestowed by the French government on former President Eddie Fenech Adami. In one swoop, Dr Abela managed to insult a friendly foreign government that wanted to honour a Maltese personality and tried to ridicule a politician who, besides giving Malta back its serenity and sanity after years of turbulent Socialist government, was the main promoter of Malta's EU membership - that very same EU membership Dr Abela now says he believes in!

What a party 'new' Labour is turning out to be; truly a party of smoke and mirrors.
