A Syrian man who was allegedly involved in a massive fight in Gzira  on Saturday night, missed the birth of his twin babies last night because he was under arrest.

Mohammed Alnaser, 35, was taken to court today along with Kasem Ksem, 34 and Mamdouh Altllas, 27, who are also Syrian.

They were accused of having seriously injured a Libyan man, Alktet Ali Aiad, during the fight in Ponsomby Street at about 8.30 p.m. They were also accused of attempting to injure Amge Mohammed Jafan.

During the court proceedings, defence counsel pleaded that the three Syrians were defending  themselves.  One of the Syrians owed some money to a Libyan man, but when he showed up at a bar to hand over the money he was told "It is not your money that I want, but I want to beat you up," counsel said.

At the time there were just over 100 Libyan men in the bar. The case continues.

The Syrians were granted bail against a deposit of €1,500 each.
