A man has been killed by a rollercoaster at a US amusement park after entering a restricted area to look for a lost mobile phone.

Police said James A Young had just finished riding the Raptor at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, and jumped over a fence to retrieve something he dropped during the ride. Erie County coroner said it was his phone.

Sandusky police said Mr Young was struck by the ride or someone on it. No one else was hurt.

The park confirmed the death in a statement and said its thoughts and prayers go out to the man's family.
