Updated 1.50 p.m. Saturday with girl's worsening condition - A 50-year-old man from Hamrun and an 11-year-old girl were critically injured during horse races in Hal Far late yesterday.

The police said the incident happened at about 9.30 p.m. when a pony hit the man and the girl. Initially it was thought that only the man's condition was critical but the police said this afternoon that the girl's condition was also life-threatening.

The jockey was also taken to hospital. His injuries are not serious.

An eyewitness said he saw 20 to 30 horses being taken away quickly after the incident  and around 300 private cars fleeing the scene "as if it was a movie fast and furious".
