A driver was seriously injured this afternoon in a head-on crash between two cars on the road which from St Julian's police station leads to the tunnels. Another two men were less seriously hurt.

Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department had to use cutting equipment to free the driver from the vehicle before he was rushed to hospital.

The incident happened at about 2 pm.

The police said the crash involved an Opel Corsa driven by a 26-year-old man from St Paul's Bay and a Maruti 800 driven by a 28-year-old man from Mgarr.

The two drivers and a 26-year-old man who was passenger in the Corsa were taken to hospital.
