A 27-year-old woman from Iklin was seriously injured in a traffic incident at the Birkirkara by-pass at around 9.30 p.m.

The woman was trapped in the wreckage of her Fiat Punto after it crashed into a barrier and became a tangled heap recognisable as a Fiat only from its badge.

Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department were called to help pull out the woman. She is receiving hospital treatment. Her injuries are not life-threatening.

The car was being driven towards Msida and crashed a few metres from the scene of another serious traffic accident on July 14. A set of traffic lights was destroyed in that crash - and has still not been repaired.
