A man who tried to burgle a travel agency was injured in the break-in and then caught red-handed by the police, a court heard yesterday.

Police Inspector Anthony Portelli, prosecuting, testified that Daniel Pace Bonello, 41, of Sliema, had a serious drug problem and was on methadone.

He denied breaking into Mondial Travel Agency, in Sliema, at about 3.45 a.m. on Saturday and causing €1,164 damages.

Mr Pace Bonello, an employee of another travel agency, Britannia Tours, limped slowly until he stood before the magistrate. His right foot and arm were bandaged after he allegedly cut himself on broken glass panes during the break-in.

Mobile squad police officers caught him red-handed and found cash, documents and other items, including tools of the trade, in his possession, the court heard.

Magistrate Michael Mallia refused to grant him bail and remanded him in custody. Lawyer Stephen Tonna Lowell was defence counsel.
