A Nigerian man allegedly violently resisted police who were called in to assist at the Ħal Far open centre.

Police Inspector Kevin Pulis told Magistrate Marseann Farrugia a security officer called for help after Friday Ehhbih, 33, objected when he was stopped from entering the open centre to deliver a letter at 7.30pm on Tuesday. He said that when the police arrived, the man attacked the two officers, smashing the wristwatch of one of them and slightly injuring both.

Defence lawyer Leontine Calleja said the matter escalated because the man could not speak either English or Maltese and could not understand what was going on.

The court rejected a request for bail.
