A 27-year-old man from Mellieha was hospitalised this afternoon after a fierce fire engulfed a garage in Triq Bilbel, Qawra.

The incident happened shortly before 1pm.

The man, and a colleague, had been working on a car in the garage when the fire developed.

A number of fire engines and an ambulance were deployed to the scene. The blaze was extinguished by firemen wearing breathing apparatus.

Residents of overlying apartments were evacuated as a precaution.
