A Guinean migrant has been remanded in custody after being caught in possession of a kilo of cannabis resin.

Following a tip off, the police arrested Mamadi Keita while he was riding a bike in Marsa and found the cannabis resin on his person.

He was charged with aggravated possession and of breaching previous bail conditions.

Lawyer Joe Mifsud requested bail, arguing that there were no witnesses apart from the police, so there was no fear of the evidence being tainted. He pointed out that the accused has a fixed residence and a job as a tile layer.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Nikolai Sant strongly objected, arguing that the accused had breached bail under the same circumstances, demonstrating that he lacked respect for the court. Furthermore, he had no ties to Malta and could therefore abscond the country.

"We must send the message that these offenses are unacceptable," Insp. Sant told the court.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale ordered the freezing of all the accused's assets and turned down the request for bail.
