A Maltese man is being held under arrest after cannabis and heroin were found in Birzebbuga, the police said.

The discovery was made after days of investigation by the Drug Squad acting on a tip off that the man was growing cannabis.

The police said they found 14 cannabis plants at a site close to his home and cannabis resin at his home. They also found heroin.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke is heading an inquiry.

The police said the man, aged 46, has previous drug, theft and fraud convictions.

MAN ARRAIGNED

John Polidano, 44 of Birzebbuga was remanded in custody this morning after pleading not guilty to cultivating cannabis plants, possessing cannabis which denoted it was not for his personal use, posession of cannabis resin and heroin. He was also accused of relapsing.

Mr Polidano was represented by a legal aid lawyer. He did not request bail.
