A man facing no fewer than 53 charges including three counts of attempted murder was remanded in custody yesterday.

Michael Mifsud, 23, denied stealing five cars and five sets of number plates from different vehicles, breaking into a take-away, carrying out three hold-ups and attempting to kill three people between last December and February this year.

According to the police, last December 5, Mr Mifsud barged into Casey's confectionery in Żejtun, wielding a gun and demanded money. He allegedly then fired shots in the direction of the shop owner who luckily only suffered injuries from flying lead.

He allegedly carried out a similar attack on another confectionery, Tic Tic in Paola on January 23, and slightly injured the two shop owners after firing shots in their direction.

Luckily, no one was at the reception of the Hotel Cerviola in Marsascala on January 4 when Mr Mifsud allegedly made off with a cash box after blasting a hole through it with his gun.

The police also charged him with breaking and entering into Chick King take-away also in Marsascala on January 26 and stealing a cash register and a safe.

Police Inspectors Ramon Cassar and Joseph Mercieca prosecuted.
