The accident happened around 9.30am in Dock 4 as a  Libyan ship was being moved to be replaced by another vessel which was taken in for repairs this morning.

It appears that the man, who had only been working at Palumbo for one month, was working on the Libyan vessel when the incident happened. He was certified dead on the spot.

This is the second death at Palumbo following that of a diver in February last year.

An inquiry is being held.
