A man was critically injured in a head-on crash involving his van and another vehicle in Mosta this afternoon.

The accident took place in Triq il-Missjunarji Maltin - the road from Rabat to Mt St Joseph - which was closed to traffic for over two hours.

The police said the crash took place at 4.50 p.m. and involved a Maruti Omni driven by a 43-year-old man from Mellieha which was heading for Mt Joseph and a Lada Samara being driven towards Rabat by a 42-year-old man from St Paul’s Bay.

The driver of the Maruti was found to be critically injured and is in intensive care. He is not in danger of dying, the police said.

The driver of the Lada was not injured.

A magisterial inquiry is under way.

The accident was the second serious one in the same street in just over a week. Three men and a woman were hospitalised after a head-on collision between a car and a van on June 20.
