An Għaxaq man has been handed a six-month suspended jail term after having falsely claimed in 2016 that he was assaulted by the police.

The man had claimed he was beaten by three officers in his home town.

Police investigations showed the claims to be false and the 38-year-old was then taken to court and accused of making accusations which he knew to be false.

Police inspector Justin Camilleri prosecuted.
