A 26-year-old man from Birkirkara pleaded not guilty to stealing the handbag of Parliamentary Secretary Jose Herrera’s daughter from Ryan’s Pub in St Julian’s, where he worked as a security guard, on April 7.

Daniel Briffa was also charged with handling stolen property, committing the crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term and relapsing.

Police inspector Michael Mallia insisted that the accused is remanded in custody. However, Magistrate Carol Peralta granted him bail against a deposit of €300 and a personal guarantee of €1,000.

Ryan's Pub clarified that the security guard was not employed by the pub but by a contracted security company.
