A man charged with stealing from and threatening his mother was this morning granted bail against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €10,000.

Jason Grech, of Rabat, was also ordered him to stay far away from the family home in Attard.

He pleaded not guilty to holding his mother against her will, stealing €230 from her, threatening to kill her, threatening to use violence against her, threatening her with a knife, and threatening her by SMS.

Police inspector Sylvana Zrinzo Azzopardi told the court that the incident happened at his parents’ house in Attard. Mr Grech chased his mother with a knife.

She said the parents told her that they and their extended family did not want their son anywhere near the house or to speak to him.

But defence lawyer Joe Brincat said he had known the family very well and he was convinced the mother would probably retract her complaint.
