A man allegedly stabbed by his girlfriend on Christmas Day was yesterday charged with having previously injured her and held her against her will.

Sean Grima, 26, of Fgura, pleaded not guilty to disfiguring his girlfriend Alicia Spiteri on December 17.

Mr Grima was taken to hospital on Christmas Day after he was found in Mahatma Gandhi Street at around 5.15 p.m., bleeding from a stab wound. Police sources said he had been injured in a fight with his girlfriend in St Simon’s Street a few minutes earlier.

Mr Grima also pleaded not guilty to using violence to hold her against her will, to threatening her and to the possession of a knife without a police licence. He was also charged with cocaine and cannabis possession.

Defence lawyer John Bonello asked Magistrate Silvio Meli to appoint a medical expert to examine his client’s state of mental health as “he was not feeling right”.

But Magistrate Meli dismissed the request after Prosecuting Inspector Spiridione Zammit told him that Mr Grima had been taken to Mount Carmel Hospital but was released because “nothing wrong was found”.

He remanded Mr Grima in custody and ordered the prison director to have Mr Grima examined by the prison doctor.
