A 45-year-old man from St Paul's Bay was this afternoon remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to slightly injuring GWU deputy general secretary Geitu Mercieca at Cafe Merisi in South Street, Valletta.

Carmelo Vella also pleaded not guilty to insulting Mr Mercieca, who was accompanied by Rebecca Maria Gatt, relapsing and breaching the conditions of three previous releases.

Defence lawyer Veronique Dalli said that her client had been working for the same company for 25 years and he had been fired for no reason without any notice or warning.

She said that Mr Mercieca had not given him the chance to express himself.

Police Inspector James Grech said the accused could not be trusted.
