A 34-year-old unemployed man who is well known to the police due to his past convictions has been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to stealing €41 from a kiosk at City Gate in Valletta.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon when officers patrolling the area saw a damaged shutter, indicating a possible break in.

The defendant, Claudio Mallia, was apprehended in the vicinity of the kiosk soon after. He was found in possession of some cash.

During the arraignment, police inspector Priscilla Lee Caruana told the court that the man was also being investigated on other thefts.

He was also charged with relapsing and breaching a probation order issued last year by another court.

The court, presided by Magistrate Neville Camilleri, denied the defendant's request for bail. Lawyer Christopher Chircop was legal aid.
