A young man from Mellieha has been banned from driving for a year and fined €3,000 after a passenger in his car was injured during an accident.

Ryan Muscat, 19, had crashed into a wall with his Ford Escort on May 17, 2009. He claimed he was driving at around 50 kilometres an hour up Xemxija Hill when he skidded on water seeping from a building to his left.

The accident caused the windscreen to shatter and a shard of glass penetrated the left eye of Robert Galea, who was a passenger.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke said in her judgement that found the accused’s version of events not very credible especially after taking into consideration the extent of the damage.

Mr Muscat knew that water had been seeping from the building and should have taken all the necessary precautions but the accident happened 80 meters away from the water.
