An unemployed Somalian man was jailed for six months today, just two days after serving a prison term over a separate conviction over the theft of a truck.

Abdikuhun Abdulkadir Mohamud, 29, who lives in Safi today admitted to stealing a Samsung S5 mobile phone, €60 in cash and relapsing. The case happened yesterday at the Zabbar Shooting Club, just one day after he had been released from prison.

During his arraignment, the man said that he had returned both the device and the money. He also claimed he is due to be resettled in the USA within a month.

However, Magistrate Consuelo Scerro Herrera noted that the only option for her was a minimum jail term, as the accused had no means to pay a fine and was not eligible for a suspended sentence as he had relapsed.

Lawyer Martin Fenech was legal aid whereas Inspector Josric Mifsud prosecuted.
