Quick-acting police early on Tuesday arrested a man who was allegedly breaking into cars in Sliema.

The police said they were alerted to the suspicious activities of the man in Rua Street corner with Howard Street at about 4.30am. District and Rapid Intervention Unit officers who converged on the area arrested a man in Dingli Street after a brief chase.

They found him in possession of items which appeared to have been stolen from a car.

Several cars were found to have been forced open and at least one had a window smashed.

Investigations are continuing.
