A man was handed a suspended jail sentence today after admitting to entering Malta using a false passport.

Matthew Kelvin admitted to using a false passport but insisted that he had valid papers in Italy.

The 34-year-old Nigerian national informed the court that he is in possession of a valid asylum document issued by the Italian authorities and declared that he wants to go back to Italy immediately.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale condemned him to a six month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
