A man with a long list of convictions this morning admitted to stealing €15,000 worth of items from a jewellery shop - soon after leaving court where he was facing proceedings over a separate case.

Carmel Mugliett, 53, from Marsascala, was charged in connection with a theft from Pavilion Jewellers in Republic Street, Valletta on Tuesday at about 10.30am.

Police inspectors Jeffrey Scicluna and Daryl Borg, who led the prosecution, told the court the goods stolen had not yet been retrieved except for €340 in cash which were found in the possession of the accused.

The man, who is well known to the police due to his long list of theft-related convictions, was also charged of relapsing.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli deferred the case for sentencing tomorrow.

Lawyer Martin Fenech was legal aid.
