Noel Farrugia, 32 of Qormi, today admitted in court to having stolen two benches belonging to Qormi council.

He stole a bench on Saturday and another on Sunday from Triq il-Hlas, Qormi. They cost €601 in all.

Mr Farrugia told the police that he stole the benches in order to sell them and settle debts.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras sentenced him to a jail term of 18 months suspended for four years and ordered him to pay back the €601.

She also placed him under a supervision order.
