A prosecuting officer told a court today that he decided to arraign a 29-year-old man from Senglea for threatening his former partner after she had filed over 10 domestic violence reports in a year.

During the sitting, it emerged that police inspector, Daryl Borg, had received reports from both ends of the warring parties.

He told Magistrate Monica Vella that the former couple had two children, adding that the accused had threatened to run her over with his car.

"Over 10 reports have been filed. I am not ready to take responsibility if something happens to her."

Defence lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar told the court that the root cause fueling all their arguments was their children and that both were at fault, explaining that the woman had chased the accused with a knife and was also due to be arraigned.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

Lawyer Leontine Calleja, appearing parte civile for the victim, said that the situation had escalated after the accused had visited his children and made off with them without her consent, adding that he had beaten the victim up with a wooden stick.

The man was charged with threatening his former partner and instilling fear, of using electronic equipment inappropriately and of breaching public peace as well as of breaking previous bail conditions related to alleged drug possession.

Dr Mifsud Cutajar requested bail, pointing out that his client, who is a wheelchair user, was "missing two legs" and that the woman therefore did not need fear him.

Dr Calleja strongly objected, pointing out that the accused was very strong, independent and drove a car. The woman had medical certificates to prove that he had hurt her with a piece of wood, the lawyer said, adding that there was "a real fear of domestic violence".

The accused was granted bail and slapped with a stern warning not to molest or harass the woman and her family. He was to contact her strictly for visiting the children.
