A 25-year-old man who allegedly smashed a window of his girlfriend's car after she refused to lower it following a car chase has been remanded in custody to avoid a possible fight.

Police Inspector Priscilla Caruana told a court today that after an argument broke out between the two, they took off in different cars, Jerken Decelis drove behind Nathalie Camilleri and called her on her mobile phone and asked her to pull over, as he wanted to speak to her.

After stopping on the side of the road, Mr Decelis approached the car and asked her to wind down the window but she refused and he punched and broke the window, injuring her eye.

During the arraignment he pleaded not guilty to causing serious injury, damaging her car, threatened her, breached the peace and assaulted her. The incident allegedly took place on Sunday at around 10.30 a.m. in Marsaxlokk.

The prosecution asked the court to deny bail because of concern for the safety off the alleged victim, as another argument might flare up.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna remanded the accused in custody.
