A Nigerian man, Isac Unigwe, resident at St Paul's Bay, today denied harassing his former wife Paola Meli, damaging her car and driving dangerously in an incident which allegedly happened early this morning.

Defence counsel Roberto Montalto said this was an incident where the accused saw his former wife with another man in front of their four children, and he reacted.

However, Police Inspector Therese Sciberras and the former wife's lawyer, Kathleen Grima, said the incident was far worse than that and it was one in a series.

Dr Grima said that Mr Inigwe had chased his former wife in a car while she had the children with her. He tried to attack her with a knife, then got a baseball bat and started bashing the car.

She said that because of previous incidents, the wife had managed to obtain a court order for him to leave the matrimonial home and retain custody of the children.

Just the day before the latest incident, the two had met in the Family Court and had agreed to defer their case in order to have time for an amicable settlement.

Magistrate Clare Stafrace Zammit remanded Mr Unigwe in custody after declaring that he could nto trusted and may re-offend.
