The two fixtures from the women's national football league on Sunday provided contrasting results.

One of the matches was balanced all the way, Melita just having the better of Mosta by the odd goal in three. However, Rabat Ajax were no match for champions Hibernians who again handed their modest opponents a heavy 13-0 beating, the same score from one of last season's two league matches.

Melita notched their first win of the campaign last weekend leaving Mosta still without points after two outings. As both sides went searching for an early goal, it was Melita who opened the score after 10 minutes through Roberta Girard.

Mosta's reaction came without delay and seven minutes from the break Jane Coates was tripped inside the Melita box and from the resultant penalty the same Coates drew her side level - 1-1.

Balance prevailed after the break but in the 55th minute Mosta committed a mistake inside their own half with Carmen Mamo, formerly of Rabat, pouncing on the occasion to score the decisive goal for Melita.

As the scoreline clearly indicates, Hibs were in a class of their own in the match against Rabat who, quite admirably, still honour their fixtures despite a succession of negative outcomes these past couple of years.

Rabat rarely ventured beyond the half-way line as the champions scored six times in the opening half, Dorianne Theuma scoring four, two from the penalty spot, and Sarah Caruana and Tessie Agius adding two other goals for good measure.

There was no story after the break. There were braces for Caruana and Tereza Zammit and a hat-trick for Kathleen Saliba.

Next matches: (Sunday) 9 a.m. Raiders vs Melita; 11 a.m. Birkirkara vs Rabat.

Standings: Hibs, Birkirkara 6; Raiders, Melita 3; Mosta, Rabat 0.

Leading scorers: D. Theuma, S. Caruana (Hibs) four goals; K. Saliba (Hibs) three goals; R. D'Agostino (Birkirkara), A. Atkins (Raiders) two goals.
