A group of nine youths has left for Brazil for a seven-week experience helping poor families in three parishes run by Maltese priests. They are accompanied by Fr Mario Abela, director of the Secretariat for Missionary Work of the Augustinians.

The youths have been preparing for their visit since October, studying Portuguese and raising funds for use on social and educational projects in São Paolo and Parana. Most of their work will be concentrated on childcare centres

The Augustinians have four day centres in the slums of São Paolo, caring for 450 poor children. For many of the children, the food they are given at the centres is their only meal of the day.
