In a short space of two weeks, Maltese wrestlers have won six medals in three different international tournaments outside our shores.

Earlier this month, Abraham Vassallo and Jason Zammit clinched silver and bronze respectively in a tournament organised by the Italian federation.

Last week, the Maltese selection, which also included debutant Nicolai Portelli, were in Sicily for two Grands Prix di Sicilia, held in Palermo and Termini Imeresi.

In Palermo, Zammit topped the 69kg class, beating a Polish wrestler in the final after he had won the previous two bouts.

Vassallo also struck gold after easily overpowering an Italian opponent by superiority in the decisive bout to win the 84kg class.

In the team classification, the Maltese finished third from six teams.

In the competition held at Termini Imeresi, Vassallo and Zammit clinched a silver medal in their respective classes.

Malta again finished third in the teams' classification.
