Family and friends gave the three Maltese who conquered Mount Everest an emotional hero’s welcome on their arrival at Malta International Airport this afternoon.

The three men, the first Maltese nationals to reach the summit of Everest, accomplished their mission on May 17 under the guidance of Victor Saunders.

Looking refreshed and pleased to see their loved ones again Marco Cremona, Gregory Attard and Robert Gatt showed the media photos of their adventure.

Mr Cremona said that the Maltese conquered the challenge quite convincingly as all three managed to reach the summit. Statistically this put Malta among the five countries having the most nationals reach the summit per capita.

He hoped their adventure would inspire all the Maltese who wanted to do something extraordinary.

The trip also saw Mr Saunders become the record holder of successfully taking up the greatest number of groups to the summit. He has a 100 per cent success rate.

The challenge also had a secondary aim – that of raising awareness about asthma and air quality in Malta.
