Chiswick House School, Kappara, recently held a Maltese Week aimed at fostering a better knowledge and appreciation of Maltese language and literature among its pupils.

The week comprised various educational and entertaining activities together with displays and presentations highlighting elements of Maltese culture and heritage.

The children were introduced to several Maltese authors who read extracts from their work, and talked about the process of writing.

Trevor Zahra emphasised that reading is one of the best ways for pupils to get ideas for their writing. He added that he drew ideas from personal experiences, and from listening to children's stories. He also answered questions and signed copies of his books for the children.

School head Anita Seguna read her book Ir-Razzett tan-Nannu Turu, to pupils while Immanuel Mifsud came to read to the pupils a series of lullabies that he wrote recently.

Carmelo Camilleri displayed his collection of hand-made Maltese miniatures, including those of a typical Maltese bus and fishing boat, and played a traditional musical instrument, while Denise Borg set up a display of typical Maltese flora. Mandy Tabone, who co-ordinated the week's activities, concluded it by teaching her class the song Il-Bajja tal-Mellieħa, written and composed by Sammy Bartolo, to commemorate the 12th anniversary of his death.
