The Asia tsunami claimed the life of a Maltese national yesterday when Nancy Woolner, 54, died in a hospital in Germany, the Foreign Ministry said.

Mrs Woolner, of Rabat, had been seriously injured when the raging waters tore apart a holiday bungalow she was sharing with her two daughters on the Thai island of Phi Phi.

Charmaine, 31, Wendy, 26 and their mother were winched to safety and treated for their injuries in southern Thai hospitals before they were flown to a military hospital in Coblenz.

Mrs Woolner was the worst injured. Over the past few days her condition became critical as a result of the water she swallowed.

The sisters are reported to be recovering from their injuries.
