Polish police were called in on Wednesday to investigate a group of 12 Maltese tourists who were suspected of being “illegal immigrants” roaming in Janowice, a Polish village.

Polish media reported that a resident of a village in the administrative district of Gmina Bestwina in southern Poland called the police when he noticed a group of people in a van driving in the area.

The police were sent to the site but established that the group were not migrants but Maltese tourists who rented the van to visit the area. Police officer Edith Bagrowska described the resident’s reaction as “exaggerated”. The identity of the Maltese tourists has not yet been established.

Eastern and Central Europe is currently in the midst of a refugee crisis of people fleeing Syria and Iraq.

Hungary this week shut its borders in an attempt to close the main land route for refugees trying to enter the EU, taking matters into its own hands to try halt Europe’s influx of refugees.
