Maltese swimmers maintained their positive streak at the FISEC Games by capturing six more medals during Monday evening's session at the Lagos Pool in Portugal.

David Zammit was in fine form as he dashed home second in the 50m fly. Zammit completed the two-lap race in 26.62, a new national record on short course.

Robert Micallef increased his medal tally after winning silver in the 200m fly in a new national mark of 2:16.37 while Andrew Chetcuti also set a new national best on way to claiming the silver medal in the 100m free in 54.66 seconds.

Beppe Grech took bronze in the 50m backstroke when touching home in 29.79 seconds.

Aprille Zammit became the first girl to win a medal for Malta in these Games when she placed third in the 50m fly in 31.33 seconds.

Maltese swimmers wrapped up a fine day in the pool by finishing second in the 4x100m medley relay in 4:09.87 - a new short course national record.

The flurry of medals on Monday took Malta's tally in the pool to 15 - seven silver and eight bronze.

In track and field, Sheldon Cassar was seventh in the 300m final, just ahead of Luca Pace.

Marija Sciberras just missed out on a podium place in the 300m hurdles when finishing fourth in 46.45 seconds. Sciberras then managed to book a place in the 100m hurdles final.

Annalise Vassallo was fifth in the 200m final while Ramona Vassallo finished tenth in the discus event.

In shot put, Jean Gauci was seventh and Daniel Vella 12th overall. Jeremy Borg finished ninth in the high jump final.

The table tennis singles competitions drew to a close yesterday. Malta was represented by James Dawson, Chris Attard, Marcus Portelli and Andrea Portelli.

Andrea Portelli registered Malta's only victory in the competition. The 13-year-old beat Guilherme Santos, of Portugal, 3-0.

Meanwhile, the FISEC organising committee hosted a forum about drug abuse in sport. Malta was represented by Luca Pace and Chloe Gambin in this meeting.

The 2009 FISEC Games end this evening with the closing ceremony.
