Maltese powerboat driver Aaron Ciantar won in front of his home crowd this afternoon when the boat he pilots with Italian Angelo Tedeschi came first in the first race of the weekend in the Super sport category.

Ciantar and Tedeschi stood at the top of the podium as the Maltese anthem was played, even though the boat is actually Italian. The win helps them consolidate their position at the top of the championship table.

Their boat Conam Yachts dominated the race, held in choppy seas off Malta’s East coast and came home well ahead of second placed Voom Voom.com and Baia High Performance Osg.

Prizes were presented by Parliamentary Secretary Clyde Puli.

The second race, among the larger Evolution class boats, was even more exciting. The OSG Racing Team boat led from start to finish but there were a number of changes in the second and third places before Veneta Marina Meta Marine and Project 1022 saw the chequered flag having come from behind as the boats in front retired. Only four boats out of ten starters finished the race.

Another two races will be held tomorrow.
