More Maltese travelled overseas in spring compared to last year, with the number going up by 15.3 per cent, according to the National Statistics Office.

They also spent more, forking out about €89.5 million between April and June, an average of €933 per trip. This was an increase of 16.8 per cent from last year.

For the first time in five years, the number of Maltese travelling outside the EU fell, with a decline of over 12 per cent from 10,600 to 9,300.

But the steady increase in the number of Maltese travelling to EU countries continued, with figures showing a 14,000 rise in the second quarter, or nearly 20 per cent.

Italy and the UK remain the most popular destinations, with more than half Maltese tourists heading to those two countries.

Travellers chose to go on more trips by sea, with an increase of over 50 per cent in the number of sea voyages made by the Maltese.
