Malta-based Aloaha Limited participated for the second consecutive year at the Omnicard trade fair in Berlin to present its smart card/e-ID middleware technology.

Omnicard is a major international conference for the smart card community. The trade show is the meeting place for highly qualified international speakers and e-security application specialists including smart card and software developers. This year’s main focus was on e-ID and e-health developments across Europe and the introduction of smart meters around the world.

During the trade show Aloaha consolidated its close partnerships with companies like Sagem Orga and HID-Global. Thanks to the continuous assistance of Malta Enterprise, the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), and the International Competitiveness Grant Scheme, Aloaha has embarked on a market penetration strategy to further internationalise its security products.

Stefan Engelbert, the company’s managing director, said Aloaha has become an international software developer offering cryptographic solutions compatible to the latest algorithms and security cards.

He explained how the chip of a smart card is just one of the security functions of an e-ID or e-health system. For a fully operational e-ID or e-health project the functions of the chip have to be integrated transparently into the existing application infrastructure.

Aloaha’s middleware is required to provide legacy applications an interface to the smart card itself. Without such a software interface the e-ID/e-health system is not interoperable and thereby limits the whole system.

Aloaha also presented its logical access and hard disk encryption products and announced further developments for the popular Android platform.

The company is present at CeBIT 2011 in Hannover this week.
