The Maltese representatives at the 2010 Commonwealth Games wrapped up their commitments yesterday with the final showings in shooting competitions at the Singh Range in Delhi.

Four years ago in Melbourne, Malta figured in the final table with two medals for Rebecca Madyson and William Chetcuti.

This year’s performance, however, was characterised by a series of below-par results, particularly in shooting, where both Madyson and Chetcuti were unsuccessful in their bid to repeat the showing of 2006.

Yesterday, Skeet duo Darren Vella and Clive Farrugia, who had classified a creditable fourth place in the teams event earlier this week, failed to leave their mark in the singles following the remaining two rounds before the barrage.

Vella scored a double 24 to add to the 67 (24+19+24) of Day One. He finished on 115 clays and 11th in the general classification that included 29 shooters.

Farrugia only managed 19 and 23 yesterday to add to the 62 (21+19+22) of the first three rounds. He placed 25th on a modest 104 points.

Clive Barton was the sixth Skeet shooter to qualify for the barrage with a score of 120 and the winner was England’s Ric-hard Brickell.

Brickell beat Georgios Achil-leos, of Cyprus, on a shoot-off after identical scores of 144.

Also in action yesterday were Eleanor Bezzina and William Vella, both in target shooting.

In the 10m air pistol competition, Bezzina had rounds of 89, 92, 88 and 91 for an accumulated score of 360. She finished 20th from 24 entries.

The gold medal went to Malaysia’s Bibiana Pei Chin who made the final on 383 points.

Vella did not fare much better either as he placed 35th from 38 starters in the 50m rifle prone event. His total was 561.

Jonathan Hammond, of Scotland, won the gold medal with a score of 696.9. He beat the world record holder in the event – Australia’s Warren Potent who scored 695.4.

In Delhi, Maltese athletes took part in track and field, wrestling, squash, shooting and lawn bowls. The chef-de-mission in Delhi is Julian Pace Bonello.
